awake during surgery?

March 302010

so i made the mistake of watching the movie "awake (or) awaken"
where the guy is supposed to be put under during his heart transplant ,but instead he isn’t given the correct dosage and is only paralyzed but still fully conscious during the surgery

in the beginning the movie states something about 15,000,000 million surgeries a year, and 30,000 go wrong like this?
any truth to it?

Yes, it does happen. My best friend was having a breast tumor removed and while she was under, the doctor started cutting. She felt the pain of being opened up, sat straight up with her eyes open and freaked out the doctor and his assistants !!! LOL … She said it wasn’t funny, but really scary because she wasn’t supposed to wake up and feel the pain. They gave her a shot and finally it did knock her out.

mia by josh groban?

March 302010

does anybody know the tracslation of mia by josh groban off of his new CD awake?
oops my mistake it is actually called mai….sorry

Mai ("Never")

Don’t look at me
Don’t try to explain
I knew it
That it would have ended sooner or later
And just yesterday
You were telling me "i love you so much"
But it was just
A state of agony

There is no thing
More illusory than love
You never think that
It can happen to you
To find yourself
Upon a thread of hope
To collapse then
Inside this darkness

Never…… will I believe
Never…… will I fall
Into these fake emotions
Where there is no compassion

Never will I search for
The truth inside a dream
Our dream

Just now
You seem so concerned
I would say
That now you’re suffering more than me
But that’s not true
You didn’t even love me
Otherwise
You wouldn’t be going away like this

Never…… will I believe
Never…… will I fall
Into these fake emotions
Where there is no compassion

Never will I search for
The truth inside a dream
But what dream!

Never

Never

Anyone know the meaning of Stay Awake(Dreams Only Last For A Night) by All Time Low?

March 302010

Im doing a song report on it and i really need as much detail as possible.Ive tried researching but had little luck.i heard its about peter pan?PLEASE HELP!

What inspired Stay Awake?
-"It’s supposed to be a conversation between Wendy and Peter in Peter Pan. But when I was writing it, it actually kind of also turned into a conversation I’ve had with myself before. Like the more adult side of myself like sensible arguing with the childish side that wants to do other things and do things differently. So that’s what the song’s about. I like Peter Pan and obviously because it’s like a conversation I’ve had with myself and it’s a pretty cool song." –Alex Gaskarth, Fueled by Photography interview

Is life expectancy proportional to sleep time vs awake time in life ?

March 302010

Will I live longer if I sleep more, like if I had a limited "awake active hours account" for my whole life ?

No, whether you’re asleep or awake, your life’s clock is ticking, and your body is aging. Your body needs a good balance of both sleep time and awake time to keep your life going as much as possible. If you go to either extreme and get too little or too much sleep, you will shorten your life span unnecessarily.

Why is it I sometimes wake up after sleeping 4 hours & be wide awake & others, I’m fighting the snooze button?

March 302010

I ususally go to bed around the same time (11-ish). I woke up after 3 1/2 hours and was wide awake ready to get things done. On other nights, I can sleep up to and past the alarm clock?

I tried to think back and look at my activity levels, what I consumed, etc and I don’t see any variance in the pattern that would stand out.

This is all about your circadian rhythm.

When you sleep you go through four sleep cycles before finally going into REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep which is where you dream. Each of these cycles until REM all increase in the depth of sleep from the first stage, where you are sleeping very lightly and can be easily awaken, to the forth stage where it would be very difficult and uncomfortable for you to wake.

Around 3:30 AM is probably when you go right back to first stage and your body is ready to start. If you have only recently started to go to sleep at 11 or you are only a few hours after that or before it, this can easily throw off your sleep pattern. I advise you to try to go to bed at the same time every night and to not eat or drink anything high in sugar or caffeine. Also, watching television, being on the computer, or playing video games before going to bed can make it harder for you to sleep.

How many more calories do you burn while you’re awake than when you’re asleep.?

March 302010

Say per hour, with a medium and noticeable activity level. It would help if someone could tell me how many a normal person would burn per hour while awake compared to when asleep, just an educated guess would do.

When you sleep, you burn 60 calories per hour. Taking a shower burn 65 in 15 minutes, or 260 per hour. Sitting while eating burns 70 per 30 minutes, or 140 per hour. Watching tv, reading a book, or sitting burns 75 per hour. Sitting while sewing burns 80 per hour. Theres a huge list of activities at the source, these are just the inactive ones. So if you mean sleeping or sitting, you burn more sitting.

But you should sleep more or you’ll become more attached to food. Tiredness feuls hunger for comfort food. ;) See second source.

I am gonna need a dental surgery and they can’t put me to sleep because I have sleep apnea.?

March 302010

Do you think my surgery will hurt too much if I am awake?
By the looks of the answers I’ve gotten so far it may not be as bad as what I had imagined. The dental surgeon is gonna give me a consultation before I go in so I am still not fully certain if he’ll end up pulling two or three teeth. What I was told to expect is a root canal and that he will have to cut down into the back portion of my gums to get a very odd yet incomplete tooth that was broken some time ago from out of the upper back area of my mouth. All I can say to what I just typed spelling out my own dental situation is WOW.. as I have also half way pre-imagined some pain or stress to the situation before going in.
Thanks for the answers everyone.

Due to sleep apnea, you can’t be put under general anesthesia, which is the type you’re referring too. With a general anesthetic, they have to breath for you and that’s the problem. They can do other things, too, though. They can give you what’s called conscious sedation or twilight sleep. It’s not deep enough for them to put a breathing tube in you, but you do lose consciousness and it’s as if you were completely out in that you won’t remember a thing. I would ask your dentist if this is an appropriate alternative for you. If not, they can give you nitrous oxide, or what they call laughing gas. You’re awake completely but sedated somewhat. You’ll still be aware of what they are doing but you won’t care. They can couple this with an anesthetic which will numb the area and nerve so that you shouldn’t feel much or nothing. If it’s a root canal or other procedure where they must disturb the nerve or root, you might feel just a small pinch for a second but it won’t bother you too much. Or you can forgo any sedation and just have the anesthetic. If you at least had nitrous oxide along with the anesthetic, the little pinch won’t even bother you. I would ask your Dentist what the best thing would be for you if you can’t be under a general. Good luck!

How do I look more awake in the mornings?

March 302010

Posted in awake | 21 Comments »

When I wake up my eyes are puffy and my face looks like I’m still asleep. It is really embarrassing! I was wondering if anyone has some tips to make my face look more awake and my eyes less puffy. Thanks!

Simple Home Remedies that can help you get rid of puffy eyes:

1. Gently tap your skin with your ring finger when you are applying eye cream to encourage the excess fluid to drain away.

2. Store creams in the refrigerator, as the coldness will also help reduce puffiness.

3. Place strips of grated potato under your eyes to help reduce swelling. Strawberries and cucumber can also help.

4. Fill a small bowl with iced water or ice-cold milk. Soak a cottonwool pad with the liquid and lie down with the dampened pads over your eyes. Replace the pads as soon as they become warm. Continue for 15 minutes. As well as reducing puffiness, this treatment will brighten the whites of your eyes.

5. Drink of enough water will also reduce eye puffiness. When a person is dehydrated the body starts storing water as a defense system and this will add to puffy eyes, so drink around 8-10 glass of water daily to get rid of puffy eyes.

6. Make sure you get enough sleep with regular timings.

7. If your eyes are puffy in the morning, go straight for a cube of ice. Wrap it in a paper towel and hold it over each eyelid for a few minutes. The cold will reduce the swelling.

* This sounds a bit bizarre, but it works. Pat some haemorrhoid cream onto the skin under your eyes. Give it a few minutes to sink in before you put your make-up on. Haemorrhoid cream helps tighten up the skin under the eyes.

If you have dark circles under your eyes, apply Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘Radiant Touch’, or another concealer which is one shade lighter than your skin, over this area under your eyes. Fix this with loose powder. Apply white eyeshadow on your top eyelids right up to your eyebrows. Apply a touch of light silver eyeshadow to the inner corners of your eyes. This will make your eyes look brighter. Curl your eyelashes and apply mascara to both top and bottom eyelashes. This will make your eyes appear wider. Apply blusher (matched to the colour your cheeks turn after exercising or when pinched) to the apples of your cheeks. This will give you a fresh glow. Finally apply lipstick matched to the blusher to help brighten up your face.
