I Don’t Know…Is This SLEEP APNEA???

June 72010

My friend said that everytime she sleeps over (she ususally stays up later, and gets up earlier then me) she says I’ll sit up like I’m awake, and then fall back to sleep. Sometimes I’ll do it more than others.

I asked a question about that earlier, and one person said it’s sleep apnea. The next day I asked my friend if I had been breathing really hard, and she said no, and I asked if I wasn’t breathing at all, and she said yes. I don’t know if she’s right about that, or was just saying that because I asked, but she didn’t know what sleep apnea was anyway.

I usually sleep 10 1/2-12 hours when I can sleep in. I’m 12 years old. Do you think I have sleep apnea??

If it’s just sitting up while you are sleeping, it sounds more like a mild form of sleepwalking. She may not have noticed that you were breathing if you were breathing normally. In order to evaluate if you have sleep apnea, you would need a sleep study where they hook up a bunch of electrodes and such to you and you sleep in a room at a sleep lab for the night.

sleep apnea question?

June 42010

does/can sleep apnea cause brain damage? also, sometimes when im awake,i stop breathin fer a few seconds. im not overweight,or anything like that.

Sleep Apnea involves lack of respiration while sleeping. Typically, it only lasts a few seconds, and the person’s reflexes kick in to awaken them enough to recover. If the problem is severe enough, the prolonged or repeated oxygen deprivation can cause a temporary decrease in oxygenation of the blood. This might cause dizziness or elevated pulse/respiration – but is not likely to have any long-term effect on the brain.
Respiration is involuntary – you cannot control it. If, as you describe, you don’t breathe for a few seconds, the autonomic nervous system will restart it.

Sleep Apnea HELP! Im 26 & after explaining symptoms was told I should be checked for?

June 12010

sleep apnea. For the last few years I have been sleep
walking. I do alot of different things in my sleep & appear to others as if Im awake, but I never have any recollection of it, others tell me.

Im tired all day I cant go to bed early because I will wake up every 2 hours. But even if I get 7 hours of sleep Im still tired all day. Then mid-day around 1 or 2, It is terribly hard for me to stay awake. In my last job I would start nodding out so I would just lay my head down & take a nap comfortably. With my new job, I cant do that. But that doesnt stop me from nodding out!

Ive been having to drive in the middle of the day for my job and even still, I nod out. Its getting worse, just on Thursday I had a 45 minutes drive and came way too close to having 6 or 7 different accidents. Its very scary, Ive been waking up just at the right time. And it doesnt matter what I do, I cant stay awake.

My memory has also been awful and I have a headache at least 5 days a week.
Please give me any information you can. And if you need more details let me know & i will post. Oh & I also have an overactive bladder. and often have very vivid dreams, i dont think they could be called nightmares, but sometimes scary. Oh and bad back pain, which probably has nothing to do with it, but thought id let u know.

THANKS SO MUCH,

MANDEE
do you wake up gasping for breath? Do you snore loudly? Do your feet swell, especially the tops? Are you overweight? Have you had your tonsils taken out? Do you smoke, and drink, or both? What is your blood pressure? Do you find that you sleep better sitting up?

No i dont gasp, I dont snore, im actually about 20lbs underweight, my feet dont swell, I do smoke , i drink but only occasionally , my blood pressure is around low 100’s/80’s or 90’s. and i rarely try to sleep sitting up if so its only breifly after nodding out. A guy at work who has it told me this. he has 4 out of 7 factors?

I have had sleep apnea for 13 years. There are some questions that you need to answer before I can give you my opinion. When you wake up in the middle of the night, do you wake up gasping for breath? Do you snore loudly? Do your feet swell, especially the tops? Are you overweight? Have you had your tonsils taken out? Do you smoke, and drink, or both? What is your blood pressure? Do you find that you sleep better sitting up?

I know that I’m asking alot of questions, but these are some of the same questions the doctor will ask you.

Like I said, I have sleep apnea and I use a C-PAP. Within the first month I noticed a huge difference in the way I felt and how much better I was sleeping. Like you I was having headaches, and nodding off at inappropriate times. Please answer those questions and hopefully I’ll be able to give you an informed answer. Please be honest!!! That will be the hardest thing to do. No one wants to admit that they are sick, but there are some things that can go wrong if you do have sleep apnea and you aren’t under treatment. Some of the side affects are….congestive heart failure, kidney damage, high blood pressure, diabetes, low oxygen count in the blood, and these are just a few.

Could I have sleep apnea?

May 292010

Hi. I’m a 16 year old male. Im around 6′1 and weigh around 220 lbs. Recently I came across a video that shows you how to go into sleep paralysis or something like that..where you basically let your body fall asleep while your mind is awake. He briefly stated that this is a way to find out if you have sleep apnea.
So I tried the method he suggested and what I noticed is was when I was in this state..I would stop breathing (which is what he described sleep apnea to be) and not notice for around 5 seconds in which I would realize that I wasn’t breathing.

I wasn’t sure if I was just making stuff up in my mind so I looked further into sleep apnea. After reading the symptons it really started to get me thinking that i might suffer sleep apnea..
Im always tired in the day. Even if I go to bed at around 10 PM and wake up at 6AM (8 hrs rest..that seems good) i feel pretty tired..usualy throughout the whole day. Also I read that it occurs more to overweight people (I am some overweight, not obese though).
the website which i got the information from was http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/SleepApnea/SleepApnea_WhatIs.html

Do you think it is possible for me to have sleep apnea? alot of these symptoms sound similar to mine..yet i don’t think i snore too much (which seems to be a big one)

It is possible to have sleep apnea at a young age. Many people do not know about it until they live with a partner that alerts them to it. The best way to find out if you do or not is to request a sleep study from your doctor. That is how my husband found out about his sleep apnea, I heard him stop breathing then gasping in his sleep. He now has a CPAP machine that assists his breathing and allows him to get quality sleep. You also may ask your family members if they have a problem, as it often is common in families. It is also more common with people with thicker necks.

When half asleep, I find that I am awoken by taking gasps of air, could this be a sign of sleep apnea?

May 272010

Yes. You may want to be referred to a sleep clinic. It seems odd I know but you usually go on a couple of sleepovers there and they record every event of apnea. My best friend did it and is now using a Cpap ? machine and seems to be doing much better.

Good luck!

if one’s cpap (for sleep apnea) setting is too high, what symptoms will they notice?

May 232010

don’t just say go to the doctor as he was wrong and I wore cpap for 3 years and they later found after years of my insisting the results from the sleep study were not right (as I only slept a half hour due to them testing me when I normally was awake (I havedelayed sleep phase syndrome and am up in daytime) and finally convincing them to repeat it when I normally slept) they found that for three years I was getting almost NO rem sleep or stage three or four restorative sleep and the setting was way too low and although I looked like I was sleeping had essentially no benefits from sleep and still had all symptoms of sleep apnea..so I don’t trust them..even after they upped setting– still no benefits I can detect except no morning headaches

Now I have a new machine that can be set higher and want to know HOW can I tell if it is TOO high. The tecnicians said I’d have chest pains and not be able to sleep or fall asleep..anything else or more details on this is what I m seeking. Thanks

At higher than optimal pressures, many things can occur. Such as, headaches, pain in the throat or sinuses, pain in the chest and lungs, aerophagia, bleeding ears, bleeding nose, and the irritation that comes from difficulty in exhaling comfortably.

At lower than optimal pressures you may experience daytime sleepiness, wake up feeling unrefreshed, snoring, untreated apnea.
hope you soon feel better!
