My little boy Daniel is 11 months, we did not have the problem of sleeping through with our older child Josh as he slept from 10.30pm till 6am from 6 weeks old. He will go down quite easily at around 6.30pm but usually awakes around 11.30 to midnight, again it usually only takes 5 or 10 minutes to settle him. However often around 2 or 2.30 he will wake and think it is time to get up and I will try in vain for up to two and a half hours to resettle him. I normally change him and give him a drink is this wrong.
What can I do to break this habit ? He has been on solids for 6 months now and often refuses a bottle of milk before bed.

As a father with two boys (ages 2yo and 10mos) as well as having lots of young nieces and nephews I have had to deal with similar situations. The advice I got the most and that worked the best is as follows: it sounds like your son has formed a bad habit and you getting him up for a change and bottle is reinforcing that habit. The best thing you can do now (although definitely not the easiest) is to break that habit by ignoring him during that time. I don’t know what you usually do to "settle" him but if it involves picking him up and holding him, you should not do that.

Most doctors will tell you that an 11mo is perfectly capable of soothing himself once he realizes that you are not going to do it. This could lead to several rough nights as he fusses/cries/screams wanting you to get him as you usually do, but my experience has been that they learn quickly (ie. less than a week and usually in 2 or 3 nights)

Like I said, it might be rough as he could carry on for an hour or two the first night, but he WILL learn and you will be helping him by doing so. There is nothing wrong with letting him cry and you are not a bad parent for mot picking him up.

My wife and I had to go through similar situations with both of our boys and now they are both happy, well-adjusted children, and we have only seen positive results from this method. In fact, now we are more confident that we will know if something REALLY IS wrong with one of them because they will not sooth themselves back to sleep when they wake up at night.
